Welcome to the Heroes of Caelereth Game Development Tools! Make sure to use at least a screen resolution of 800x600 and switch your system colors to 16 or 32 bit – this way you should see the icons and pictures used in the program with the right colors.

The lastest files to download can be found here, so please download them first before your read on. Note: If you’ve already installed Santharia GDT, skip this part, and continue with the next paragraph Upgrading from a previous Version.

In order to get started, you need to double click on the setup file you’ve downloaded (Santharia GDT, then installation takes place more or less automatically. You only need to tell the setup program the folder where you’d like to install the Tools, and that’s it (e.g. “c:\santharia\”, but you can in fact install it wherever you like). Setup will install several important files in this folder, which are listed below:

If you’ve already installed a previous version of the program, you only need to download the new Santharia GDT.exe file (Version 1.1) and replace the one you can already find in your Santharia GDT folder. That’s it. Run the file and the program will adjust your database to the new needs.

The master database is not necessary to have to design own dialogues. However, it contains all dialogue data Santharian users have generated so far. So in fact this is the funny part: You can test all these dialogues here (though you can’t add, edit or delete any of them). You can find the latest edition of the master database for downloading on the site in a single zip file called Unzip its contents (master.mdb and various picture files) into your Santharia GDT folder (replace files in case they already exist there), and you now will have the possibility in the program to switch between your own database, where you can find your own dialogues, and the master database, where you can experience what we have elaborated so far in the whole team.

If installation is complete, doubleclick on Santharia GDT.exe to start the program. If you start it the first time the program will prompt you for your Santharian username (the one you use on the message board). Type it in (e.g. Artimidor), then confirm with Ok.

You will be asked if a new user should be added to the database, so just say “yes”, and you’re in. Next time you start the program, you will automatically start with the username you’ve entered the first time. All changes you’ve done related to your username will be saved once you leave the program, and restored upon starting again. BTW: You can see your username, the session ID, as well as the used database path in the status bar, at the bottom of the screen.

On top of the main window you can see a toolbar, and above the toolbar a menu, both giving you access to all important forms. You can either click on a toolbar button or select an entry from the menu, both open the same forms.

The Program Menu contains the following entries:

In this menu you can define general data, which you need in order to refer to in other parts of the program. E.g. in order to start building a dialogue, you need to add a character (NPC, “non-playing character”) first to the database, and in order to add a new character, you first need a location to which you can allocate it. These general things have their place here. You can change the following data here:

This is the most important part. Here you can build and test your dialogues. Forms you can enter through this menu part are:

That’s a typical windows menu you’ll encounter in other Microsoft products as well. In case you have opened more than one form at the same time (e.g. Races and Locations) you can swap between them by selecting the other form in this menu. In the same way you can click again on a toolbar button, which is already pressed (which means that the form is already open), and the form will come to the front again.

This menu contains only one entry at the moment.
