1. What's this page all about?
If you haven't read through the
Santharian site tour yet,
we strongly recommend to do so, as that what it's there for. If you simply
would like to catch a glimpse of the Santharian atmosphere in general, you
can also check out the Santharian Teaser
To make it short: The Santharian Dream is an entirely non-profit cooperative world building project, where people from all over the world enjoy creating in the same gigantic fantasy universe. We try to accomplish something together, which single persons would never be able to achieve. People who help designing the Dream are entry or story writers, poets, artists, map makers or even singers, music composers and Flash programmers. We follow general fantasy world principles in the way J.R.R. Tolkien provided them, but the Santharian Dream is not based on Middle Earth. However, you'll find elves, orcs and halflings in our concepts as well.
The Santharian Dream website is a site for designers and players alike. Developers communicate through the Development Forum, while players enjoy play-by-post role playing at the Role Playing Message Board. Also we have developed our own browser game, Santhworld, where you can play textbased graphic adventures and single player role playing games.
2. Is this all unique stuff? Have you done that all by yourself?
Yes. Everything you can see or hear on this site was created directly by Santharian members or provided by external artists who support our cause by allowing their pictures to be included here.
3. What are Santharian members?
Members are people from all over the world, some amateurs, some professionals in their field, who enjoy being part of the Dream. All works are done free of charge or were integrated due to prior permission to use their works for Santharian purposes. Contributors are considered Santharian members as soon as they have some entries, stories, pics, musical pieces up, which results in an invitation by senior members to do a masterwork. A masterwork allows you to tackle a major entry, something you aren't allowed to do right away - this is necessary to keep the world consistent. If you are a Santharian member you get a team page of your own, which lists all the works you've done for the Dream and every page on site where you contribute points to your tram page.
4. Who retains the copyrights of work I do for the Dream?
However, whatever work you do for the
Dream: It is still your own work. If you've drawn an image or have composed
a song, you can of course do with it whatever you want. You can sell it, and
you don't need the permission of the Santharians to do so. So all copyrights
are retained by the artist
himself/herself, we only put up on site what someone allowed us to put up.
Whenever you do work directly for the Santharian Dream, you should keep in mind that you volunteer to support the Santharian cause and help to make it grow and prosper. So you should agree with our philosophy of helping each other to achieve something great with this project. If you write a story references to elaborated things on the site are welcomed, if you draw pictures, it is appreciated if you try to realize something which has already been described. This guarantees that people work together, not for themselves. The Santharian Dream is a community project. Together we are strong.
Finally members are also not allowed to use the works of other Santharians in order to make profit without the other member's consent, even if the works were made in cooperation to make progress together in the Santharian context. If you want to, ask the artist for permission!
Also Santharia for sure won't use your works to make any profit without any further explicit permission from you. Frankly put, there's no intention to make profit whatsoever from out side, not with your works and not with ours, as that's our philosophy. Ever seen an ad on our site? No, because that's how it works. Santharia is a completely non-profit project, and should there be decisions necessary where making profit is involved for whatever weird and highly unlikely reason we will consult our artists in advance of course.
5. Where do I sign up?
on what you want do. If you want to participate in Santharian play-by-post
roleplaying, make sure to register at the
RPG forum (see
book link at the top right, or just click
here), but before you start please read the
for RPGing first.
If you want to be part of the Santharian development team, you should have enough time for developing things in detail and like to comment on the works of others at the Forum. If you meet these requirements, you should register at the Development Board (see link at the top left) and post a joining request at the Joining Requests Forum. You'll receive further instructions there.
6. Is the site updated regularly?
Yes, usually every third Sunday evening Central European Time, providing there's enough material. Otherwise updates happen on demand.
7. What would be the best browser configuration to view the Santharian Dream?
We suggest Internet Explorer or Firefox.
Some pages are specifically optimized for Internet Explorer, but basically
every recent browser should do. A screen resolution of at least 1024x768
should be the minimum to view the site as well.
To get the full Santharian feeling we too recommend downloading all the fonts you can find at the Santharian Downloads section! Get the ZIP-files (there's one containing all you need in one piece), extract them and install them into your Windows/Fonts folder.
8. I'd like to have a picture drawn for my role playing character! Can any of the Santharian artists do a pic for me? Pretty please with sugar on top?
Please be aware
that all Santharian artists contribute to the development of Santharia
voluntarily, and that we are very thankful to have such fantastic artists,
who help building a dream we share together. However, you shouldn't take it
for granted that artists will do character portraits for you for free. Such
works are personal requests and not directly Santharia-related. Artists, who
help on the development side of Santharia can also choose themselves what
they would like to contribute and are in no way obliged to do any member's
biding. Drawing fantastic pictures sure is a lot of work, consuming time and
resources, and if you want to have a special picture for your character and
the money to pay for it, please consider commissioning such a work from a
Commissioned works will have top priority for the artist, you can choose format and techniques used to draw the image, and I'm sure your needs will be satisfied perfectly. By commissioning an artist's work you also show your appreciation of his/her work and support the artist as well as the Santharian cause, to which these artists play an essential role.
9. I like your concept and am thinking in earnest about participating at your Santharian world creation. Any suggestions where to start?
The easiest way to get into the project is to describe
beasts and plants, providing you have enough Santharian
background information. Constructing some outlines to stories, myths or
legends or to devote yourself to a special part of history of a certain race (elves,
dwarves, humans, orcs etc.) or to create some main historical events (wars etc.)
is also possible, but you should always keep the general Santharian context
in mind. The most effective way to get really get into the world is to focus
on a specific territory, settle down there, and make contributions by using
the same context. You'll get to know your stuff and the stuff on which it is
built - and that's the key thing!
Furthermore: Be aware that there must be certain limits to your creations, which you'll get to know if you study the relevant parts of the Santharian site, especially the Cosmology Section (e.g. the creation of a main god would need general approval etc.) - but this should be obvious, because somehow we have to work in the same universe, don't we? - One short hint: To give you some geographical orientation I propose that you print the complete Santharian map you can find in the Maps Section, this may give you some inspiration - or as Tolkien would say: Let's discover what's on the map and not simply invent things!
But of course you're not bound to the proposals above. For example if you would like to do some drawings you wouldn't have to know any details about Santharian history etc. But that depends on the circumstances. However, if you think on joining just let us know what you have in mind through mail or post at the Dev Forum and we can discuss on how to start integrating you and your imagination into the project.
10. What if I've decided to join your team, but finally cannot come up with something due to personal reasons?
In fact we're quite aware that humans tend to plan hundreds of things and realize only very few of them. There's no time limit to your designing activities and you've got no obligations. It's a project for your spare time. So if against all odds you cannot put your visions into reality, no problem. That's life!
11. How do you do your map drawings, Artimidor? And could you give some technical advice?
With Adobe Photoshop - this is obviously the best drawing tool I've ever encountered. I've done a detailed tutorial on maps in the Workshop section, complete with an example map with all the layers featuring various elements to place on your own maps, so better check it out!
12. What are your main concerns about the project?
Time, time, time...
As a webmaster I've
got a full-time job to do,
maintain the site (and improve it permanently), organizing
all things currently in development and correct/adjust finished entries
etc. And of course I'd like to do some other things in my spare time,
but as a matter of fact I spend 80-90% of my spare time with Santharian
Site promotion often takes a back seat therefore. If you're a webmaster and have got some ideas on your own how to improve the number of visitors, I'd like to hear them! I really wouldn't mind if you put a link on your site to the Santharian realms...
13. How does communication between the Santharian developers work?
To talk to a Santharian developer you can use the e-mail address you can find in the team section, or you can - preferable - use the Santharian Development Board. The latter is the best way because all Santharian developers will be able to view the current topics/problems and comment on it. In the team section you will also find Instant Messenger numbers/addresses (ICQ, MSN, Yahoo!, AIM etc.) of other members.
14. I've found some great works on other sites, which sure would fit perfectly into the Dream! Can we use them here?
answer: No. The Santharian Dream will not
use copyrighted pictures, songs or texts from artists, musicians or writers
who haven't given explicit permission to use his/her work here on the site.
Should there be any works on the site, which you know that we are not
allowed to use due to copyright reasons, please point them out to us, so
that we can take care of those. Santharia is a place, where you should only
find unique stuff, done in the Santharian spirit. Works of people, who are
not Santharian members, can only be added to the Dream if we have explicit
permission. Concerning text based contributions: Thorough research is
allowed and encouraged, but copying of texts is not.
In case you already are a team member and present the works of others as your own in order to add them to the site, this can have serious consequences. As the webmaster is mainly responsible for the content of the site, the integration of such material is strictly forbidden, and should you intentionally and/or repeatedly try to get works on the site, which are not yours, you risk to be banned from the Santharian team according to a decision by veteran team members. Please be aware of these things before you post on the Santharian Development Forum.
15. Where do you gain the energy to work on this gigantic project?
16. What is Santhworld?
Santhworld is our very own browser game, where you can play textbased graphic adventures and single player role playing games. Santhworld was developed by Santharian members and is constantly being expanded by adding new modules designed by our artists and/or story writers. An editor which allows you to make your own Santhworld modules will be released shortly. You can access Santhworld here.
17. Wow! Your site is great, fantastic, unbelievable!
Interesting statement, pal, but that's in fact not a question! However: If you think this way, so why not tell us in the Guestbook or write a personal mail to the Webmaster, and - of course - tell your friends! The more response we get from you the better the site will develop (even if you don't intend to join the Santharian project), so don't hesitate and drop us a line or two.
