HERBARIUM DEVELOPMENT RULES |
If you're a
member of the Santharian Dream and would like to add stuff to the Herbarium,
please post in the Herbarium
section of the Santharian Development Message Board. People will then
comment on your new addition and if the entry is approved it will eventually
move to the site in one of the coming updates.
However, in order to design plants, herbs, trees,
bueshes, flowers, weeds
etc. for the Santharian
Compendium the following necessary sections need to be covered. If you still
aren't sure what you should put in certain sections, please read
through some entries first and see how others have done
their entries.
GENERAL RULES
How to write names
If you describe something, always write the first letter of the thing/being you
describe in capitalized form (e.g. "Dragonfly", "Black Rose") throughout the
entry. On the other hand always use lowercase letters if you mention other
things/beings which are mentioned within the entry ("dragonfly", "ranlesh" or
"black rose").

Keep it as Santharian as possible
Also try to make your stuff as unique "Santharian" as possible. Why not create
things like a giant beetle, a large bloodfly, a strange fish, mushroom trees...
- which never existed here on earth? It's good that we use some "earth
creatures" (and plants) in Santharia as well, especially horses, cows, deer,
some cats, and bees are helpful as well etc. But always keep in mind that unique
Santharian creatures should predominate over "modified" or "twisted" earth
creatures!
Plant first, the fruit
If you want to describe a certain kind of apple or a berry etc., always describe
the bush, tree etc., not the specific fruit in the entry. Mention the fruits in
the Usages section, that's where it belongs to!

Basic Overview of the Plant
Write a short description on the plant for general
orientation what this plant is all about. Can contain things such as
some things on its appearance, its main uses, how it is found etc.
Perhaps some general information that might not fit into
any of the other areas - maybe some history if required.
People who are searching for the right plant for a certain territory should only
need to read the few lines at the Overview to know if this is something they are
searching for or not. So try to keep the things mentioned here as precise as
possible.
Appearance
Write here what the item looks like, any extra things
that grow from it, and items that it produces. If you aren't
familiar with Santharian measurements, please check out the entry on
Santharian Measures and Weights
first. Write it so that we can "see"
it and that an artist could draw a picture from it.
Mention perhaps the climate the plant
flourishes in and the
general "growth"
cycle.
Territory
Put here where this plant grows (which continent, which climate,
which special region, e.g. mountains or sea, swamps etc.). How
far spread the plant is would also be worth mentioning, along with
any other information which relates to the placing of the
plant.
Reproduction
If the reproduction of the plant is worth mentioning, do it here. Not required,
but sometimes it's quite useful to know.
Usages
(optional)
Is it medical? Is it used for anything in particular? Can people eat it
or fruits the plant produces? Does
the plant have any postive or negative effects on a race? Not
every plant has a special use, but if you can think of one, please put it in
here.
Myth/Lore (optional)
If there are certain stories, legends, myths related to this
plant (historically accurate ones or "fantastical"), mention them here. It may
also be the case that there are proverbs and sayings associated with the plant,
or that even poems were written for it.
Origins (optional)
Does your plant have any magical creation surrounding it? Is there something in
particular about this plant which makes it special? E.g.:
Was it created by a god/dess, powerful person,
freak of nature, through experiments? Where did it come
from - where is it now?
If you follow these guidelines I'm sure developing plants, trees, herbs etc. for the Herbarium is much easier and will produce better results. - Happy developing!
